Studying

What is FSRS, and why does it matter?

FSRS-6 is the modern, free spaced-repetition algorithm. Rather than moving every card along fixed intervals, it learns how well you actually know each one and schedules it for the day you’re about to forget it. The result is fewer reviews for the same retention — you study less and remember more. It’s the algorithm people switch flashcard apps to find, and Cardpile uses the official implementation, not a home-grown copy.

How does the review loop work?

Tap a card to flip it, then rate how it went on a four-button row: Again, Hard, Good, Easy. Under each button you can see the interval that grade would set, so you know the consequence of your answer before you tap. Cardpile reschedules the card and moves you to the next one that’s due.

Your decks

Can I import my existing Anki decks?

Yes. Export your deck from Anki as an .apkg file and import it into Cardpile — your cards, the deck name and the layout come across in seconds. You don’t rebuild anything by hand. If a deck is in a newer packed format Cardpile can’t read yet, it tells you exactly how to re-export it so the import works.

How does the AI card generation work?

Paste what you’re studying — a paragraph, a list, a page of notes — and Cardpile drafts flashcards from it. You review the drafts and keep only the ones you want; just those count against the day’s quota. The free tier includes a daily allowance, and the one-time unlock raises it.

Where are my decks stored?

On your iPhone. When you turn sync on, they’re also stored in your own iCloud account (the CloudKit private database), so they follow you across your devices. There’s no account of ours and no server of ours that holds your decks — we have no access to them and could not read them.

Do I need to create an account or sign in?

No. You open the app and start making and studying decks — no email, no password, no sign-in. The only thing tied to your Apple ID is the purchase itself and, if you enable it, your own iCloud sync — both handled by Apple.

Buying

What’s free, and what does the purchase unlock?

The free tier is a real, usable app: make decks, study with FSRS, import, and generate cards with AI up to a daily limit — capped at a starter number of cards and decks so you can feel the whole loop first. One purchase of €9.99 lifts every cap to unlimited and raises the AI quota, with Family Sharing.

Is it really one-time? You won’t switch to a subscription later?

Really, and no. It’s a written promise on our terms page: we will not convert your purchase into a subscription, and we will not remove features you paid for. Buy-once where every other craft FSRS app rents is the whole point of Cardpile — we’re not going to undo it.

I bought it on one device — do I have to pay again on another?

No. Your unlock is tied to your Apple ID. Sign in with the same account, open Cardpile → SettingsRestore Purchases, and the unlock comes straight back, with Family Sharing for your household.

How do refunds work?

Through Apple, like every App Store purchase: request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something isn’t working, write to us anyway — we’d rather fix it.
